Field note 03

Structured Data as a Data Source

Machine-readable metadata can describe a page beyond its visible heading and body text.

Use clear identifiers

Distinct values for name, description and identifier help show which property a parser selected. The values should remain ordinary text and should not require active content.

Compare with visible content

Structured data may agree with the page title or intentionally differ for a controlled comparison. Documenting both sources makes the resulting interpretation easier to explain.

Validate the document

Small valid JSON-LD documents are a better baseline than large examples copied from production sites. Malformed variants should be bounded and quick to reject.
